How does Recreational Vehicle (RV) insurance work?WE ANSWER:Since your recreational vehicle is essentially a "home on wheels", getting it covered under your automobile policy would not provide adequate protection. Therefore, you should look for a separate RV insurance policy.
Why Buy A Special RV Policy?You may find it is a waste of time and money getting a separate policy for your recreational vehicle, but remember that personal auto policies (PAPs) exclude the following situations:
  • PAPS do not cover the loss of personal belongings such as clothes, laptops, stereos, i-pods, cameras, etc.;
  • It does not protect you against liability when somebody is injured in the area where your recreational vehicle is parked;
Specialized RV insurance provides coverage for a whole range of situations which may result in injuries, damage or loss.
Coverages Available Under RV Insurance
  • Bodily injury and property damage liability protects you in the event of an accident whereupon another person is injured or sustains property damage. As with any other type of vehicle insurance, you need to specify the liability limits, subject to state minimums.
  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage protects policyholders when they sustain injuries or property damage in an accident when the at-fault driver does not carry any liability insurance, or the at-fault driver's liability limits are too low to adequately compensate the policyholders for their losses.
  • MedPay coverage is optional - it covers the insured's medical expenses incurred within three years of the accident, no matter whose fault the accident is.
  • Collision and comprehensive coverage pays for repairs to your RV or for replacing it, if it is physically damaged or stolen. The insurer pays the expenses less the deductibles. You can insure your recreational vehicle against loss on the basis of its market value or agreed value. If the RV is a write-off in the first five years after its model was manufactured, it can be replaced by the latest model on the market. The following coverages are automatically included in Collision&Comprehensive coverage:
    • $750 of Emergency Expense coverage.
    • Up to $10,000 of Vacation Liability coverage (limited to RV-pleasure-users only).
    • $2,500 of Trailer coverage.
    • Replacement Cost Personal Effects.
